A furious sage Durvasa once cursed all the Demigods and Devas, when the Lord Indra (King of Devas) carelessly dropped the garlands of flowers and ended up being stepped by his elephant which were given by the sage.The sage in pierce anger cursed all the Devas and Demigods to lose their immortality.

Curse Of The Sage Durvasa

Lord Indra with the deceived wisdom created a foul play which gave the Asuras the head-end of Vasuki which led to poisoning and weakening them. Hence, the Demigods got the tail-end and Asuras got the head-end.

During The Samudra Manthan

Demigods for help went to Lord Vishnu who suggested to churn the Ocean Of Milk with the help of Asuras. The churning would give out Amrit, also known as the Nectar of Immortality, which will be divided among the Asuras and Devas.

Regaining The Immortality 

As soon as the Nectar was formed, a feud emerged in between the Devas and the Asuras. Lord Vishnu then took form of a most beautiful and ravish woman named Mohini, which then outsmarted the attention of Asuras and gave the Nectar to the Devas.The Asuras in rage begun a battle for the Amrit against the Demigods. Finally the Asuras where defeated and peace was awakened.

The Hoodwink Trap Of Mohini

The mountain slowly began to sank into the ocean, it was then the Lord Vishnu manifested himself in a form of humonguous tortoise Kurma. The tortoise then weighed the mountain on his back and the churning caused some scratching which gave some pleasure to Kurma.

Reincarnation Of Vishnu as Kurma

They started adding all sorts of vegetables, grasses and herbs for churning, they used the prestigious Golden Mandara Mountain as the churning rod. They used Vasuki (the Snake) as a rope and they began churning. This is also popularly known as Samudra Manthan.

Ocean Of Milk

They would have to throw all kinds of vegetables, grass, creepers and herbs into that ocean and churn it. From this churning, he said, would come the Nectar of Immortality. To churn the ocean they would have to use the golden mountain, Mandara, as a churning rod. With great difficulty and Vishnu’s help they managed to lift and transfer Mount Mandara to the Milk Ocean. They used Vasuki, the giant serpent, as a rope. At the start, playing a trick, Indra asked the asuras for the head end of Vasuki. But asuras suspecting foul play, took the head end, only to be deceived as the poison from Vasuki was slowly weakening them. Wrapping Vasuki round the mountain, the demons took hold of his head and the demigods took his tail and began churning the ocean. They tried to churn, but the mountain sank into the ocean and they began to despair. Vishnu then took the form of a gigantic tortoise, Kurma, and supported the mountain on his back. In the form of a giant tortoise, Kurma balanced the opposing forces of the demons and the demigods about the churning rod of Mount Mandara in the Milk Ocean. The demons and the demigods started to churn again, back and forth. Kurma felt as though they were scratching an itch on his back and this gave him pleasure. The first thing the churning produced was a deadly poison which threatened the whole world. As they continued churning many wonderful things came out of the ocean, but at last they got what they wanted – the Nectar of Immortality. Both groups wanted it, and a quarrel developed. Vishnu came to the aid of the demigods to help them get the nectar for themselves. Lord Vishnu took the form of an apsara, a beautiful maiden named Mohini, and seduced the asuras into letting her distribute the nectar and also to abide by her order of distribution. As soon as the devas were served, Mohini disappeared thus deceiving the asuras and making them totally weak.
