You'll want it on you at all times, for the desire to sketch a moment can strike at any time. Keep a minimalistic sketch kit

The more you do it, the better you get.

You want to be and to capture as much of the scene as you can in the short amount of time you have. Pick the most eye catching thing to you, expand upon there, but don't get caught up in all the small, surrounding details. Negative or empty space may also be used for annotations and ideas.

Start sketching what's interesting first

The mind likes to fill in the blank. If there is a repetitive pattern, simply start drawing the pattern, and leave the rest of the area blank. Saves time, and then mind translates the detail by itself. If an image is symmetrical, simply drawing about half of the object will give them viewer enough information to fill in the rest.

When sketching very famous landmarks, sometimes focusing on the well-known postcard view can be boring, [...] it’s fun to look for the most unusual view to sketch. Sketch the most extreme angle, such as looking straight up at a statue/building or looking at it from the back side.

Make Brilliant Work

Being an excellent student doesn’t make you a creative genius. People who do exceptional work often struggled in school. The educational system rewards you for mastering conventional thinking, but brilliant ideas are always unconventional. It’s normal to want to feel accepted, but if you want to create brilliant work, you need to draw motivation from your work itself, not from a desire for approval.

Stop trying to fit in

Use your negative experiences as creative inspiration. If something bad happens to you, look at it as a compelling story or a chance to come up with an innovative solution. When you take a difficult path, you will experience criticism from people who are unhappy with their own decisions to play it safe. Embrace difficulty. Everyone and their TV commercial want you to believe that the key to a good life is a more admirable job, a more rugged car, a prettier girlfriend, or a hot tub with an inflatable pool for the kids. The world constantly tells you that the path to a better life is more, more, more—buy more, own more, make more, f*ck more, be more. You are constantly bombarded with messages to give a f*ck about everything, all the time. Give a f*ck about a new TV. Give a f*ck about having a better vacation than your coworkers. Give a f*ck about buying that new lawn ornament. Give a f*ck about the latest gadget.

How Consumerism Works

About Suffering
