History has shown that cooperation is reliable under the right conditions and with the right people, even under the most trying circumstances. However, the capacity to cooperate is not universal, nor is it easy to put into practice.

Cooperative efforts are short-lived

Research shows it is nearly impossible to support reliable cooperation. We can encourage better cooperation by turning our attention to the possibility of new alliances. It encourages us to recognize the collective identity and efforts. Creative activities with others make us better equipped for the uncertain future. Our new friends and allies will work with us to ensure a positive outcome.

Making Cooperation More Reliable

It is vital to approach cooperation as a potentially transformative encounter, not as a sacrifice. There are three motivations behind our willingness to meaningfully cooperate:<ol><li>A moral motivation that is tied to our values.</li><li>A relational motivation to start and maintain a satisfying personal relationship with somebody.</li><li>An economic motivation to enrich or avoid loss.</li></ol>

A motto to live by every day is that good character works for the common good. When you work on yourself, you are a positive difference-maker in the world. Good character: Good deeds

You have limited time. Don’t take a minute for granted. Every time you do something, you have to remind yourself that it’s time you will never get back. Time is our most precious resource. It is always ticking away. Every second that passes belongs to death. You can never get it back. For example,  you may see a beautiful sunrise today but will never see the same specific sunrise again.  That is why you should live and embrace life and not waste it.

Memento mori: Remember you will die

Nietzsche said you “don’t just bear what is necessary, you love it.” When something bad happens, it can either break your heart and spirit, or you can embrace it and turn it into the greatest thing that ever happened to you. It’s good that it is difficult. If there were never any obstacles, everyone would do it. There would be a whole lot more competition. So you don’t just accept what is happening to you, you love it and lean into it. When you lose the manuscript you’ve been working on you say Amor fati. When you’re stuck in traffic, you say Amur fati. Use it as fuel to become better.

What do you hope will happen at the end of the meeting? Start the meeting expressing what is on your mind and clarifying what is your purpose. Prepare ahead thinking about the actions that will need to be performed to achieve this purpose and make sure to discuss them.

<ul><li>Speak from your own Point of view.</li><li>Note down the exact words people say so that they feel heard when you recap. When you don’t fully understand follow up.</li><li>Be open and follow up offline to clarify any doubt or unclear item.</li></ul>

Be Open And Listen Carefully

Balance making the other person comfortable with sharing your goals.Pay attention to sentence structure:<ul><li>If you want clarity use the past + you: “What did you mean by what you just said?” </li><li>to show forcefulness use present + I/me: “I need,” “I like” and “I want.”</li><li>to go in problem solving mode and identify a common solution use future + we/us</li></ul>

Non verbal communication is important to reinforce your message and conflicting signals can cause lack of trust or confusion.
