Developing Clear Speaking Skills & Improving Your Pronunciation

We all know how important is English these days, so the ability to speak it well will open many doors for your career and social life. That’s why we need to focus on our learning goals and achieve them as well.

1. INTRO

How can we develop our speaking skills? The first thing is, that we need to build a strong foundation. That means that we need to expand our vocabulary in order to express ourselves fluently in English. And what I mean by that? I mean that we need to learn new words every day - 10 per day or 15, it can also be less. We can use for example YouTube and different language apps. It is also important to lean all those words that we’ve learned in phrases and sentences (to link them together, to use some functional expressions).

2. DEVELOPING SPEAKING SKILLS

And that also applies for sounds. We put two sounds together, make them disappear or even change the sound for a better flow. The flow is a secret! With the flow we come to better speaking skills.

2.1. Sounds 

All that is connected with stressing of words as well, which is another important thing to keep in mind. There are stressed / unstressed syllables in a word and stressed / unstressed words in a sentence.

2.2. Stressing Of Words 

If the person is not sure where to put a stress, the best way to find out is to look up in the dictionary. If we want to sound even more “professional”, I suggest you to use contractions. Contractions are shortened forms of two words.

2.3. Contractions

While we are learning how to speak a language, we should also pay attention on how native speakers talk. They talk with rhythm, which is the overall result of the things that I mentioned on the top of this blog post – the result of linking, stress and contractions.

2.4. Rhythm

Another tip is, that we can make ourselves more understood by simply training our mouth muscles with different word games, so that we can produce the sounds of English properly. More fun strategy for developing speaking skills is participation. Participation in public speaking events in university or theaters will bring you a lot of new experiences (for instance: TED Talk).

2.5. Training Of Mouth Muscles And Participation

After all that said, we come to more serious problem. The biggest problem of English or any other language, is that we might know a lot of words, we’ve learned all the vocabulary, but we still pronounce the words wrong and because of that, we'll not be understood, then there’s very little point of learning all those words. Some of us speak another language (native language) and our mouth and tongue are trained in a different way. They are trained to make the sounds of that language and not of English for example.

3. PRONUNCIATION 

A lot of people make mistakes while speaking, and the main reason is their speed of speaking. I personally have (sometimes) the same problem. When we talk too fast, we swallow the words that are not supposed to be swallowed. We should pay attention on how our month is moving and making sure that we pronounce every single sound in each word. I learned that in Linguistics class with IPA table (I'll explain IPA for you in my other blog post). We can first talk slowly and then after some practice, faster.

3.1. Focus On Articulation

Ue online dictionaries (as I already mentioned) and their speakers to know how to pronounce certain word in every accent.

3.2. Use Of Dictionaries 

We can practice English with repeating the words over and over again. Repetition!We cannot expect to improve our pronunciation or speaking skills, if we only say a word once. And the best exercise for this is a game called Tongue Twisters. (training our mouth muscles).

3.3. Repetition

We can also practice our pronunciation by listening to the videos on YouTube with subtitles and try to imitate a native speakers, speak out loud and record ourselves. After recording we can compare our recording and the original.

3.4. Listening Comprehension + Recording 

Idntify your weaknesses! We can spend our time by focusing on which English sounds are the most difficult for us personally and write them down. Then the other step is to type in google “Tongue Twisters” and search for the list with a lot of those sounds and practice.

3.5. Identifying Our Weaknesses

With a lot of practice you’ll improve your pronunciation and develop your speaking skills, plus you'll get more confident. Remember, it is important to build English speaking confidence. After a while, you’ll completely rid yourself of any speaking fear, building a strong foundation in the language.

How to get smarter isn't mysterious and it isn't complex. The answer has been the same for millennia. Read more (though it's true these days we do now have lots more delivery methods. 
The trick isn't in figuring out what you need to do--it's in actually managing to do it.

Getting Smarter

Not captivated by a particular book at a particular time? Then on to the next. Just stop reading, put them down. 
There are countless amazing books out there. Don't settle for less than good.

Be Ruthless

At least in the case of nonfiction, if you already know the material, feel free to skip ahead. When you go to read actual books you're like, 'I know that, I know that, I know that,' and you keep on going, and you read much more quickly. 
And that's really the way to read a lot. This also creates a virtuous cycle in which the more you read, the more you'll know, and the more you can skip.

Skim Those Books

The best reading is focused reading, when you're trying to solve some kind of problem. You could aim to answer a specific question, investigate a given author, or scratch an itch of curiosity. 
You want to start with a problem or question when you're reading.

Read To Solve A Problem

If you arrange your reading around questions or areas of exploration, you'll end up reading multiple books about the same topic.
That allows you to do a kind of cross-sectional mental econometrics and see which pieces start fitting together.

Read In Clusters

Gathering a stack of non-fiction titles to explore a topic is great, but don't neglect fiction. 
Reading fiction is important to understand the cross-sectional variation in humanity, to understand how difficult generalizations can be, to just get a sense of how different social pieces fit together, and to get a sense of different historical eras -- and plus, reading fiction is often just plain flat-out fun.

Read Fiction

Every area you don't give a damn about you probably should read at least one book in. Because the very best book in that area is superb, and you're not going to know what it is. 
So if tennis is something you don't know anything about, well, read Andre Agassi's memoir. That's a wonderful book. You don't have to know about or care about tennis.

Read Stuff You Know Nothing About

Take reading seriously, develop a passion for it, and view it as part of your practice as a knowledge worker to get ahead, but along the way, have fun doing so!

Setting goals can change your life for the better. For example, goals can help you get in shape, improve your finances, or launch a business. But goal-setting can also make you feel miserable. Potential problems are disillusionment and burnout. The difference between success and burnout lies in how your goals are designed.

Goal setting: the good and bad

Psychologist Edwin Locke's research on goal-setting shows three important findings:<ul><li>Setting goals improves performance.</li><li>Hard goals improve performance better than easy ones.</li><li>Specific targets work better than "trying to do your best."</li></ul>Other research shows that easy goals lead to poor efforts, and too hard goals also lead to poor efforts. That means that goals should be challenging but not overly difficult.

Aim for hard, not impossible

We can motivate ourselves to pursue our goals using the 80% rule. Track your smaller goals (30 days goals) and track your success rate. If you're under 80%, try setting a more achievable target. If you're over 80%, try something more challenging.

Use the 80% rule

One exception to specific, challenging goals is creative problem-solving. Tasks that need deep thinking, such as learning or creative work, goal-setting can become problematic. These tasks require all your working memory. A stressful deadline can hurt your ability to generate a creative solution.  One solution is to set goals to work on a creative problem for a chunk of time without expecting results. This allows you to focus on the task.

Deadlines are poison for creative problem-solving

Visualise the difficulties that might come up when pursuing your goal and deciding in advance what you will do. You might get sick two weeks into an exercise program. Your exams get rescheduled. Your motivation is usually at its highest when setting the goals. Planning for difficulties can keep you from abandoning your goal when things get tough.

Visualize failure

You don't have to tell other people about your goals.  Peter Gollwitzer found that telling people about your goals can act as a substitute for actually taking action. Announcing our goals can make us feel like we have already done something and result in putting in less effort.

Keep it to yourself at first

Research shows that we procrastinate when we perceive tasks as unpleasant.When we set goals, our motivational hardwiring doesn't cope well with things in the future. We'll start to slack when the deadline is in the far future, and the immediate work isn't enjoyable.<ul><li>The key is to break down your goals into smaller, daily actions.</li><li>Try to create an incentive to stick to the daily plan.</li></ul>

Break it down and make yourself accountable

Much of the stress from setting goals comes from goals that are not truly your own.  External incentives, such as paying someone to complete an otherwise interesting puzzle, could dampen internal motivation. Too many outside goals make it harder to motivate ourselves consistently. However, life-affirming goals feel deeply meaningful and easier to achieve.
