Harsh Truth About Life from Movies

“Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. This short story is the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival, and I think it’s a lot better than the film adaptation. It’s a slowly unfolding story about loss and cherishing the time you have with people; as soon as I finished it, I reread it immediately. You can find it in Chiang’s book Stories of Your Life and Others or read it here.

Story Of Your Life 

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. This 2015 novel, which alternates between the onset of a pandemic and its aftermath 20 years later, is a gripping read that also perfectly encapsulates the loneliness and isolation of a big loss. While the HBO show is a well-regarded adaptation, I’d still recommend reading the book, as the prose is really lovely. (“As Jeevan walked on alone he felt himself disappearing into the landscape. He was a small, insignificant thing, drifting down the shore. He had never felt so alive or so sad.”)

The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa. This book takes place on an unnamed island where entire categories of objects start disappearing without warning or explanation, and the work of the memory police is to ensure these items stay forgotten, never to be spoken of again. While that description makes it sound like an intense dystopian thriller, it’s actually quite soft and mournful.

Severance. This gorgeously shot Apple+ series manages to be both a totally engrossing (and extremely well-paced) puzzle box and a really great meditation on work, grief, and the ways we try to compartmentalize and move on from loss. After finishing season one I immediately wanted to rewatch it—it’s that good.

Black Mirror. Each episode of Black Mirror is its own contained story, and several of them deal with loss and heartbreak. I’d recommend season one, episode three: “The Entire History of You” (breakups/divorce); season two, episode one: “Be Right Back” (death/loss); and season three, episode four: “San Junipero” (death/loss/love).

Everything Everywhere All at Once. The only thing I knew going into this movie was that it involved multiverses and would supposedly make me weep. But because it’s so absurd and laugh-out-loud funny, I found myself wondering, with 30 minutes or so left to go in the film, when I was supposed to start crying. Not long after that, my girlfriend and I both found ourselves fully sobbing—like, tears streaming down our faces. If you lean toward the fun/distracting stuff when you’re grieving, but also want some emotional release, I can’t recommend it enough.

Everything Everywhere All At On

Inception. Perhaps you saw this movie when it came out in 2010 and don’t recall it feeling very grief-y; if that’s the case, I would definitely encourage you to revisit it. On rewatch, the complex plot becomes easier to follow, so you can focus on the story, which is about corporate espionage, sure, but also about coping with loss. If your grief has made your life feel completely surreal or like a nightmare you can’t wake up from, definitely add this one to your queue.

Inception 

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This was my go-to “I’m really sad” movie for years, and while other, newer, offerings have slowly taken over the top spot, I will always have a special place in my heart for it. It checks all my boxes (heartbreak, do-overs, wiped memories, snow) and gets extra points for starring Kate Winslet. You’re not alone in this, and you won’t feel this way forever. Until then, I’ll be thinking of you.

Things to read and watch when you're grieving. 

Dune is a saga of books written by Frank Herbert, considered one of the founders of Science Fiction as we know it today. The Story revolves around Atreides family and their fight for Arraskis (or Dune), the only planet where the spice can be found - a substance that allows interestellar travel. Besides deep characters and intense conflicts, Dune provide us interesting lessons.

4 Things I learned Reading Dune

One of the most important lessons is how fear is seen in this saga: not as a weakness, but as an enemy that you can face. To overcome fear, the Bene Gesserit, a political and mystic group, created the litany against it:"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Fear Is The Mind-Killer

The combat is a constant element in Herbert's saga, both in physical and mental ways. One of the many lessons of Ducan Idaho, a great warrior and instructor of the young Paul Atreides, is about observation and how crucial it is in the first moments you face a problem. The eagerness to win may lead us to take rash actions, but deep diving into problems will lead us to the consistency of success:"Use the first moments in study. You may miss many an opportunity for quick victory this way, but the moments of study are insurance of success. Take your time and be sure."

One of the first things that Leto Atreides, leader of house Atreides, does when he gets to Dune is to see how the spice was collected. During the visit to the desert, a great sand worm attacks a large shipment of spice, but instead of running away or saving the cargo, Leto Atreides face the danger to save the people working there, showing to all of them that the life of his followers worth more than the most valued substance in the universe:
"He risked his life and his son's life to save these men [...]. Such a leader could inspire fanatical loyalty. It would be hard to defeat him."

People Worth More Than Things

Paul Atreides (Muad`Dib), protagonist of Dune, learned the way of the desert during his time in Arrakis, from how to save water to how to ride the greate sand worms. However, this didn't happen only because of the circunstances of his birth, but because he knew how to learn:"Muad'Did learned rapidly because his first training was in how to learn. And the first lesson of all was the basic trust that he could learn. It's shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Muad'Dib knew that every experience carries its lesson."

In Cambridge Gardens (Ladbroke Grove), eyewitnesses appeared who began to notice the ghost of a red double-decker bus. This phantom was mainly encountered by drivers and frightened them very much.

They began to compose stories and legends about this ghost. Commuters within the area began to fear that if they ever encountered the ghost bus, they might meet a terrible fate.

The very first witness claimed to have seen a car driving along an empty road when suddenly, a strange bus appeared. The driver of the car got scared, abruptly swerved his vehicle, and hit a pillar. He was killed on impact. After the incident, the bus immediately disappeared. This happened in 1934.A few years ago, a phenomenon called the phantom bus started appearing on the road. It was moving in the oncoming lane at a very high speed. Any unfortunate driver who encountered it would try and steer clear and end up crashing into something. In most cases, people were dying on the spot.

One of the victims was lucky enough to survive. Later he was taken to the police station. He said, "I turned around the corner, and saw the bus moving! The headlights were shining, both floors were lit, and there was no one inside, neither the driver nor the passengers! I, of course, turned the steering wheel, drove out onto the sidewalk, and slightly hooked on the fence. And the bus immediately disappeared."

The driver who made such a statement to the local authorities of North Kensington in London, of course, could have been drunk, or hallucinated, or fell asleep at the wheel, and later tried to shift his blame onto the English ghost bus. But can this be said about the hundreds of drivers who experienced the same mysterious red double-decker bus rushing towards them?

The logo of a well-known company was drawn on red bus number 7. When accidents became more frequent, this company changed its name and logo so that people would no longer have any suspicions about it. Sightings of a ghost bus in the same place all the time became even more terrifying. The driver and passengers were absent, and the brand and color of the bus were the same. This phantom bus usually appeared at 1:15 AM and would always disappear without a trace.

A ghostly figure would appear on the road and at the depot for several days after the Great Train Robbery, but it would disappear after a few minutes. This phenomenon was observed by many people, so it could not be attributed to the insanity of individual witnesses. Detailed interrogations of all eyewitnesses led to the discovery that no one had seen the ghost before. Since then, residents have nicknamed the ghost bus the 'night knight'. The residents of the area began to claim that the ghost chose its victim deliberately.

Also, London authorities were never able to gather any hard evidence of the mysterious bus that was causing panic among drivers. For this reason, they decided to improve the visibility of the intersection between St. Mark's Road and Cambridge Garden by widening the road a few meters. In addition, it was decided to repair the road in this mystical place. Soon after that, the bus stopped appearing, and the number of deaths decreased. But still, to this day, many drivers try to avoid this haunted road.
