Jesus, in Matt 23 has a lot of words to say about the pharisees, religious (Jewish) leaders in Jesus’ time who were full of hypocrisy and failed to being people to God. Instead they did fanciful things or followed religious practices to a T, but they ignored the true nature of following God. They were outwardly righteous but inwardly had no true belief but instead acted like their own authority.“Woe to you.. Pharisees, hypocrites! Even More On Jesus On Religious Leaders

Jesus here is not saying to not abide by what people call a religion. He isn’t saying don’t participate in these event. The pharisees were in fact excellent at ‘abiding by’ the laws laid out in the Old Testament (which Christ affirms) so it wouldn’t make sense for Him to try tearing that down. What He is suggesting is that you should not be a hypocrite or heartless and do these actions for the sake of trying to win God’s approval or man’s approval and your motive should be from the heart to love the Lord your God with all of your heart mind and strength. You can’t win over God through actions.

Wrapping Up Jesus’ Idea of Religion

God knows that man is not perfect nor can we be perfect. That means we can’t rely on our behavior and need to rely on something else for salvation from God. However some might say this is a new idea with Jesus and the Jews of the Torah didn’t have the same concept of the ‘from the heart’ belief.I’d like to express a concept from the OT that I think proves God is looking towards our hearts and that’s the tenth commandment.“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife… or anything that is your neighbor’s.” ‭‭Ex‬ ‭20‬:‭17‬Coveting is only an internal sin.

Old Testament Evidence God Wants Your Heart, Not Perfect Action

We are also taught that the fathers of the OT weren’t saved by the incredible amount of works they did or how good they might’ve seemed to their neighbor, but by faith. Old Testament Leaders Are Saved By Faith, Not Their Works

The NT authors seem to believe Christians are all directly connected to God, and that our behavior is a product of reacting to His love for us that He would give us a way to be directly connected and reconciled to Him. We act from the heart in gratitude towards Him and in love for Him. We don’t act to win His favor, which is what Christians will tend to identify as ‘religious’ behavior or mindset. It would be impossible to do anything to win God’s favor. How would you? Act perfectly according to His law? Good luck. And if you’ve ever broken the law you’re already too far gone. We need saving.

As you can see, even from just a few examples, the New Testament authors, along with Christ, want us to seek God genuinely from the heart, knowing that we’re already loved and saved. We’re not to seek approval from God for what we have done.“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?” Matt‬ ‭7‬:‭22‬Although what we do pleases God, it’s not to win him over though pleasing Him, but because we love Him that we want to please Him.

Our Faith Is About Relationship

Hopefully you’re starting to get the picture. There’s even more to find in the Bible, the Word of God. Based on how Jesus and the New Testament authors spoke about HOW we are connected to God, we, generally have come to the conclusion that our connection with God is relation, not transactional or a matter of following religious tradition. Not that those are wrong, but they can cloud the true picture of connection with God, which happened also with the Pharisees.We were made for fellowship with God, earnestly and genuinely.

Relational, Not Religious

If you’re not already in relationship with God, then you need to turn to Christ today and abandon the hypocritical religious showing off, or turn away from the sins that are separating you from God. Genuinely turn towards and seek Him and He will not hide from you. You’re imperfect, as am I and everyone else. This means you have no chance at reconciling your debt to a perfect God unless someone who is perfect has paid the debt for you. There is a person who, because He loved you, paid that debt so he can swap righteousness with you in the face of God.Read the gospels for yourself and decide!

Evolution of God's Concept

God has been understood in different ways throughout history. Pagan tribes in Mesopotamia worshipped multiple gods to counter chaos.The Israelites, however, believed in a single God, merging two pagan gods to form their own. In return for their loyalty, this God, known as Yahweh, promised to protect them. These beliefs emerged in the related histories of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths.

Unique Divine Belief Emerges

The Israelites initially perceived Yahweh as their god of war before developing a more universal vision of him. Unlike pagan gods, Yahweh revealed himself through personal encounters and had prophets like Isaiah. He was more remote and separate from humans, unlike pagan gods who believed in a shared divinity. Yahweh demanded loyalty and rejection of other gods, introducing the sin of idolatry. Over time, Yahweh's concept changed to being seen as a creator god and later as a wise god influenced by Greek philosophy. These ideas contributed to the establishment of the Jewish concept of God.

Evolving Israeli Understanding of God

Jesus, seen as the Messiah by some, challenged the idea of a single God. His death caused a redefinition of God, with Paul presenting Jesus as the "Son of God" who died for our sins. This laid the foundation for Christianity, viewing Jesus as God's main revelation. A major rift developed between those who saw Jesus as the Messiah and those who didn't. By the 80s AD, Christianity had separated from Judaism, with a benevolent and kind understanding of God. The two religions had diverged in their views of God.

Jesus Redefined God's Messianic

Christianity started as a cult in the Roman Empire, but quickly spread and became the state religion. The idea of creation from nothing and the concept of the Holy Trinity were difficult for new converts to understand. The Council of Nicaea in 325 officially accepted the doctrine of creation ex nihilo. Early theologians like Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, and Gregory of Nazianzus sought to explain the dual existence of a single God and the divine trinity. They believed that the terms Father, Son, and Spirit referred to God's essence.

Distinctive Christian Foundations

Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was born in Mecca in 570. He received a revelation from God and spread the idea of monotheism throughout his tribe. Islam teaches fairness, charity, and the avoidance of excessive wealth. The Koran, its holy text, is not only a guide but also a beautifully written work. The scripture was transcribed by literate followers as Muhammad couldn't read or write, and it is known as the Qur'an, meaning "recitation." The beauty of its language convinced many that it was a divine message.

Muhammad: Islamic Faith Pioneer

The Arab world's expansion led to a blossoming of culture and education in the ninth century. Islamic intellectuals known as the Faylasufs sought to prove the existence of God through rationalism, like the Greek philosophers did with their conception of God. However, they realized this was futile and turned to studying observable phenomena instead. This Arab scientific boom had a profound impact, inspiring Jewish and Christian thinkers to embrace reason and logic in their study of God. Furthermore, the translations of Plato and Aristotle from Arabic into Latin influenced European Christians.

Muslims Bring Greek Logic

Monotheistic religions have traditionally seen God as a person-like figure, which can lead to judgment and exclusion. To balance this, mystical traditions like Sufism, Kabbalah, and Christian mysticism emerged. These practices seek to connect with God on a deeper level and interpret divine qualities symbolically. European mystics, like Meister Eckhart, embraced a more abstract view of God, using terms such as "desert" and "nothing" to represent the absence of human characteristics.

Tri-Faith Mystical Traditions

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, major changes occurred in all three monotheistic religions. The Jewish community in Spain faced persecution from crusading Christians, leading to exile and the development of a new concept of God called Safed Kabbalism. The Catholic Church underwent the Protestant Reformation, with reformers seeking to overturn strict doctrines. Islam experienced a deepening divide between Shia and Sunni Islam, with Shah Ismail of the Safavid dynasty forcing Shia Islam on his subjects to eradicate Sunnism.

Religious Renaissance of Centuries

In the sixteenth century, significant scientific and technological advancements led to a shift in people's belief in God. The Enlightenment brought about a new spirit of independence and a belief in progress. Influenced by philosophers like Immanuel Kant, some intellectuals attempted to prove God's existence through reason and mathematics. René Descartes and Isaac Newton approached the issue from different angles but shared a scientific spirit and rejected religious mythology. Their new religious creed, called Deism, replaced traditional religious elements with an impersonal God.

Enlightenment Reinstates Impersonal God.

Atheism is not a complete rejection of God but rather a rejection of the current understanding of God. Technological advancements and changes in society made the traditional figure of God seem irrelevant and incompatible with modern life. This feeling was shared not only by Christians, but also by Muslims and Jews who felt that God had failed them in the face of European colonial expansion, anti-Semitism, and persecution. As a result, atheism gained popularity in the 19th century as people felt that God had been abandoned.

God Dies in 19th Century

The history of God is long and diverse, and it continues to be written today. However, old ideas of God no longer fit the current times. People are becoming atheists and churches are emptying in Europe. The concept of God restricts human freedom, according to philosophers like Sartre.The Holocaust also made standard ideas of an all-powerful God seem absurd. Despite these challenges, the idea of God remains universal. New conceptions of God, such as process theology and a more inclusive portrayal, have emerged. To survive, the concept of God must adapt to the demands of the present.

In Search of God

Throughout the histories of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the understanding of God has continuously evolved. These three monotheistic religions have sought to find meaning through philosophical ideas, rational thought, and revelations. God has been a central figure for centuries and will continue to be in the future.

the quote is a call to live a deliberate and thoughtful life, prioritizing actions that are essential, morally sound, and beneficial. It's about making choices that align with one's values and the greater good, while letting go of the unnecessary, unethical, or harmful.

Cease that which is not necessary, not right & not good

Buddhist philosophy, which shares some similarities with Hinduism and other Eastern schools of thought, often addresses the nature of suffering. It suggests that attachment and desire are at the root of suffering. If a person's thoughts are consumed by their problems, it might be seen as a form of attachment to those problems, or a failure to embrace the impermanent nature of all things.

From this perspective, the use of the mind should aim towards societal benefit, promoting overall welfare and happiness.

Manly Palmer Hall (March 18, 1901 – August 29, 1990) was a Canadian-born scholar and philosopher. Well known for his 1928 encyclopedic outline of symbolical philosophyThe Secret Teachings of All Ages, he authored dozens of books and hundreds of essays and gave thousands of lectures in Los Angeles and throughout the world. Mr. Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in 1934 and was its first president, remaining so until his death in 1990.

Mr. Hall was  a seeker and lover of wisdom, and the very definition of a philosopher. He lived a unique and profound life that centered on his search for meaning in the world’s wisdom traditions. An autodidact and polymath, Hall amassed an extraordinary collection of rare books and artifacts from his extensive travels and devoted himself to the study of these works and their application to the positive development of the individual and society as a whole. He was a consummate teacher who took his deep learning and translated it into an accessible and compelling presentation to readers and listeners for seventy years. Hall attained an amazing degree of scholarship in those branches of learning that bear upon the beliefs, ideals, and convictions of humanity.

Mr. Hall gave nearly seven thousand different lectures and talks and appeared on numerous radio and television stations throughout the United States. All of his lectures, many lasting two hours, were given extemporaneously and without notes.
