From 1935 until his death, Albert Camus kept a series of notebooks to sketch out ideas for future works, record snatches of conversations and excerpts from books he was reading, and jot down his reflections on death and the horror of war, his feelings about women and loneliness and art, and his appreciations for the Algerian sun and sea. Why do shops like to move everything around? Well, it’s actually a simple answer. Changing the location of items in a store means that we, the customers, are exposed to different items as we wander around searching for the things we need or want. This ploy can often significantly increase <a href="https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.227.8388&rep=rep1&type=pdf">unplanned spending</a>, as we add additional items to our baskets – often on impulse – while spending more time in the shop.

You Are A Lab Rat In A Supermarket

Studies suggest that as much as 50% of all groceries are sold because of impulsiveness – and over 87% of shoppers make impulse buys.It is known that external shopping cues – “buy one get one free” offers, discounts and in-store promotional displays, for example – play a key role.An appealing offer can lead to a rush of temporary delight, and this makes it harder to make a rational buying decision. We’re overcome by the perceived value of the “saving” if we buy the item in the here and now – so we ignore other considerations such as whether we really need it.

Bundling is another technique that retailers use to trigger impulse buying. Complementary products are packaged together as one product, with one price, which often provides a substantial discount. Game consoles, for example, are often sold together with two or three games, and grocery stores have “meal deal” bundles and even web pages dedicated to a whole range of bundle offers.

<li>Instead of opting for choice, choose. Instead of allowing yourself options, decide what’s most meaningful to you – CHOOSE.</li>

<li>A lack of vision and clarity means you end up serving the dreams of others.</li>
<li>Create a vision so big and bold you feel electrified and uneasy. Captivate yourself, captivate your emotions. It should resonate deeply and move you – you should be able to touch it, smell it, live it – it should bring you to tears. You should feel an energetic shift as you think and talk about, like experiencing your dream holiday, like testing your dream car.</li>

3. Captivate Yourself

<li>Growth requires constant challenge, something that stretches you, that pushes you to the edge of your perceived limits.</li>
<li>Without challenge we wither away, we fade. We become complacent, stuck, bored, apathetic. Our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual capacity – no longer being tested – start to suck the life force out of us.</li>
<li>Doing the same thing and expecting change is madness.</li>

4. Choose Growth

<li>Don’t allow your potential to be wasted –take action, implement what you read and learn.</li>
<li>Motivational conferences and reading alone won’t make it happen. Move from KNOWING to DOING (the endless reps, practice, challenge – this is when it starts to get hard – and where most people quit ) to BEING (where the magic happens ).</li>

5. Start Doing

“When you experience resistance, laugh at it. Smile at it. See it for what it is—a sign you’re growing.”

<li>Keep heading towards your goal no matter the obstacles and rejections.</li>
<li>Persistence kicks in when that initial high of doing something new wears off. People fail because they don’t stick with the process after the good feeling fades, and through the hard times.</li>
<li>Know that you will face obstacles, sleepless nights, existential crises and moments that bring you to your knees – that’s part of the path.</li>
<li>Behind every overnight success are years of effort, struggle, and rejection and consistent action.</li>

6. Do It Daily

Fall in love with delayed gratification. A farmer doesn’t plant seeds and wake up yelling in frustration the next day that the crop hasn’t bloomed. Instead they trust the process – with sunshine, water, and patience the crops will bear fruit. Why do some people fail to reach their goals? They expect too much too early and give up at the first sign of struggle – overnight success is a decade in the making.

7. Delayed Gratification

The 1% Rule: How to Fall in Love with the Process and Achieve Your Wildest Dreams

There’s a pattern that goes like this: it’s late, given when we’ve got to wake in the morning, but instead of going to bed, we stay up. The next day, of course, we feel sluggish and weary and we promise ourselves an early night. Then it happens again: it’s already midnight and we’ve got a normal start the next day but we don’t turn in. It’s not that we’re full of energy – we actually feel desperately tired – but we resist going to bed. And the following day it’s the same: we’re worn out yet we don’t turn in until a very late hour. And it keeps on going.

The Problem With Rising Early: We Can't Sleep Early

At times during this erratic sleep cycle, we feel deeply frustrated: we call ourselves idiots and worse: obviously we need to get to bed early, yet we are too stupid, stubborn and self-sabotaging to do so. And to our profound exhaustion, we add the burden of self-disgust. But our anger at our own behaviour doesn’t lead us to change our habits. If our partner complains about our late hours we dismiss it as nannyish nagging – and it’s all the more irritating because we know they are right.

We Know We Are Wrong Yet Continue Our Sleep-Wake Cycle

It’s one of the weirdest features of being human: a completely clear sense that how we’re behaving is bad and counter-productive doesn’t get us to stop. Harsh criticism is the utterly entrenched human tactic for getting people to change – just as self-condemnation is our instinctive strategy for self-improvement – yet it doesn’t actually work. It induces panic, shame and despair but doesn’t bring about the desired alteration.

The Paradox Of Being Wrong

For many years, through childhood, night-time seemed immensely exciting. It was a secret, mysterious zone when from our darkroom we might hear the grown-ups laughing around the dinner-party table, talking of things we weren’t supposed to know about and catch, perhaps, the sweet scent of cigar smoke. If we were ever allowed to be up late it was for some special occasion; or there was the thrilling time we had to take a late-night flight at the start of an overseas holiday and the world seemed enormous and filled with adventure.

And even though such lovely associations may not be at the front of our minds, we continue to have a subterranean, but significant, sense that to go to bed early is to miss out on the joys of existence. Our late-night activities might be utterly prosaic but just by being awake into the early hours, we’re participating in an ideal of what adult life is supposed to be like. And so, night after night, the bed is there, quietly waiting for us to draw back the sheet, turn out the light, lie down and close our eyes, but it’s half-past midnight or 2 am and we’re still up.

Associating Life With Late Night Adventures

The thrills that have implanted themselves in our memories were only by accident linked to being up late. The conviviality, the sense of discovery and adventure, the feeling of exploring big ideas and the experience of emotional intimacy have no intrinsic connection to the hours of darkness. The deeper engagement with a friend or a lover, the determination to investigate a neglected area of our potential: these aren’t late-night speculations; they are the tasks of our day-time selves – requiring for their proper accomplishment, our poised and well-rested minds.

Have A Thrilling And Complete Life In Day Time

We will, at last, be able to let ourselves turn in early – and get the sleep we need – not when our irritation with ourselves reaches an unbearable peak and we renounce as hopeless our search for adult happiness and finally submit to the banality of an early bedtime, but when we relocate our longings and seek our pleasures where they can more realistically be found: in the bright, energetic hours of the new day.

”Why American Teens Are So Sad" made me realize the big lesson from a movie I recently enjoyed. This beautiful man, King Richard, protected his daughters from early pressure and burn out. Let kids be kids. The combination of working hard from a young age, but keeping the work manageable and fun turned Venus and Serena into some of the greatest athletes of all time.

Why American Teens Are So Sad

I’ve spoken about being a major procrastinator many times, but it’s time to go a little deeper into it and learn more. (If you’re a procrastinator like me and you’re reading this, chances are you’re procrastinating something right now, think about what it is.)

A Little More On Procrastination

To procrastinate means to delay something that needs to be done as soon as possible and actively finding ‘better’ things to do rather than doing the things that need to be done.It’s knowing fully well, the consequences of delaying something yet doing it only to face trouble at the end – be it by rushing through work or a project or having to listen to long lectures from seniors. Procrastinators are these exact people!

What does it mean to be a procrastinator?

We tend to put everything till the very last moment knowing fully well the negative outcomes of it yet focusing our attention towards things that are less attention demanding and something that can distance us from the work that needs to be done in the present.Procrastinators tend to have a much more optimistic idea of time and tend to push everything for later thinking they’ll ‘manage’ everything just fine. (Which is mostly just putting their luck to the test)

(According to so many different sources) It is commonly said that procrastinators only procrastinate to distract themselves from their fears of failure or inability to commit themselves to a particular work or continuously do it for a long span of time.They tend to procrastinate only to have more control over their emotions.According to some studies, procrastinators don’t really have control over their habit of procrastination, for them it is aresponse behaviour towards extreme authoritarian lifestyle one has had in the past or even in the present.

But then why is it that people tend to procrastinate?

According to some other studies, procrastinators procrastinate because they tend to prefer the “now” and value how they spend it instead of planning or worrying about the future. They prefer having fun and enjoying the present rather than waiting for it in the future.Some studies also claim that most of the procrastination done by the average person is unconscious and can probably be avoided if people simply focus more on their everyday life and be more organized.

There is also the final group of people that think the people who procrastinate do so because they lack the motivation to actually work and are unaware of the powers of their own emotions – of the present and the future and the role these emotions can play in getting the motivation they need for getting things done.

But what is the actual reason for procrastination? Why is it that we feel so much better just pushing things to the side and instead focusing our attention to less important, more fun tasks? The answer to this could be absolutely anything – it would differ from individual to individual, you will just have to look within yourself for this one.

-> The first and maybe most important thing is to embrace procrastination as a part of yourself. Know that you can't change everything about yourself, so instead of finding ways to change it and look for ways that you can be yourself

How To Use Procrastination Better 

1) make a to do list - preferably with more easier tasks at first and the tasks getting progressively difficult.2) making a mental (or physical) note of each thing you have to do and alloting time to it based on how long it will take you to do that specific task, and if you can, allot yourself some extra time just incase.3) use deadlines to your advantage - while alloting yourself time to work on something keep the deadline in mind and allot yourself a timeline which ends earlier.

A few steps to consider before saying "Just do it" are

4) create "punishments" for yourself for work not done (no, don't go beating yourself with a lamp like Dobby), make the punishments something that will test your self control, for example, something like no sugar for a whole week or not going on social media for a week. 5) control the distractions around you - as much as possible. It isn't easy to turn everything off and live like a monk, and it probably isn't the most wise thing for many people, but try to limit the distractions around you and try to hold yourself accountable for the things around you.

-> When setting up to get into the work zone know that it takes time to get into the rhythm of work and different types of tasks tend to have a different rhythm to it. So when you place work for yourself, try to group out similar tasks together to stay within the similar rhythm and not having to switch your mind from one type to another type of task.

-> When you get into the "Just do it" mindset, remember that it won't necessarily last for hours. So whenever possible try to write down all the things you need to get done and the possibile steps to do it and the things to keep in mind - this will be your blueprint. So the next time you feel even the smallest bit of energy, pass a glance at this blueprint and that will give you the idea and motivation to finish the task at hand.

-> Speaking of motivation - know that simply having an idea in your mind or a goal ahead of you won't always motivate you to stop slacking and start working. Sure, it does help to have a visual idea of what you're working towards, but sometimes feeling instead of simply seeing can be more help. -> Lastly, learn that overcoming procrastination and using your bad habits for your own advantage will take some time and a lot of effort and relapsing back can be completely normal but you need to be able to overcome those hurdles and not fall back.

Procrastination is a huge part of my life as I'm sure it is of many others as well, so maybe it's time that we look a little more deeper into the strange world of procrastinators and procrastination.

When you're afraid of something, such as flying, that will limit your ability to travel or visit friends. Likewise, if you're fearful of public speaking, fear will restrict your ability to express yourself and share your ideas. If you're scared of talking to your boss or asking for a raise, that will impact how much money you make.

Fear is limiting

Fear is exactly the same as excitement. Your heart races, you might sweat a little, and you might feel a tightening in your chest. Your body goes into a hyper-aware state. The only difference between fear and excitement is what your brain is doing. Your mind is either working for you or against you. <ul><li>If you're excited, you think, "Oh, wow! This is going to be so cool to ride this roller coaster!"</li><li>If you're afraid, your brain is going through, "No way! There's no way I'm doing that!"</li></ul>

Fear is a physical state in your body

A strategy to beat fear in a high-stress situation is to use the five-second rule in combination with an anchor thought.  <ul><li>The five-second rule helps you to switch gears in your mind. Count 5-4-3-2-1. </li><li>The anchor thought is reframing how you feel. For example, instead of feeling afraid to deliver a presentation, frame it as exciting. Or, if you need to have a conversation with your boss, focus on how you will feel after the conversation. </li></ul> Before you do something that really makes you nervous or afraid, count 5-4-3-2-1, then insert the anchor thought you've already come up with.

Law 1: Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
No matter how many idiots you suspect yourself surrounded by, you are invariably lowballing the total. This problem is compounded by biased assumptions that certain people are intelligent based on superficial factors like their job, education level, or other traits we believe to be exclusive of stupidity. They aren’t.

The Numbers

Law 2: The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.Stupidity is a variable that remains constant across all populations. Every category one can imagine—gender, race, nationality, education level, income—possesses a fixed percentage of stupid people. There are stupid college professors. There are stupid people at Davos and at the UN General Assembly. There are stupid people in every nation on earth. How numerous are the stupid amongst us? It’s impossible to say. And any guess would almost certainly violate the first law, anyway.

Nothing Else Matters

A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.A stupid person is one who causes problems for others without any clear benefit to himself.The uncle unable to stop himself from posting fake news articles on Facebook? Stupid. The customer service representative who keeps you on the phone for an hour, hangs up on you twice, and somehow still manages to screw up your account? Stupid.

The Golden Law Of Stupidity

There are three phenotypes that co-exist alongside stupidity. First, there is the intelligent person, whose actions benefit both himself and others. Then there is the bandit, who benefits himself at others’ expense. And lastly, there is the helpless person, whose actions enrich others at his own expense.

Stupidity Vs Non-Stupidity

The non-stupid are a flawed and inconsistent bunch. Sometimes we act intelligently, sometimes we are selfish bandits, sometimes we act helplessly and are taken advantage of by others, and sometimes we’re a bit of both. The stupid, in comparison, are paragons of consistency, acting at all times with unyielding idiocy.However, consistent stupidity is the only consistent thing about the stupid. This is what makes stupid people so dangerous.

The Non-Stupid

Essentially stupid people are dangerous and damaging because reasonable people find it difficult to imagine and understand unreasonable behaviour. An intelligent person may understand the logic of a bandit. The bandit’s actions follow a pattern of rationality: nasty rationality, if you like, but still rationality.With a stupid person all this is absolutely impossible as explained by the Third Basic Law. A stupid creature will harass you for no reason, for no advantage, without any plan or scheme and at the most improbable times and places.

Unreasonable Behaviour

Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances, dealing and/or associating with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.We underestimate the stupid, and we do so at our own peril.

A Costly Mistake

Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.We can do nothing about the stupid. The difference between societies that collapse under the weight of their stupid citizens and those who transcend them is the makeup of the non-stupid. Those progressing in spite of their stupid possess a high proportion of people acting intelligently, those who counterbalance the stupid’s losses by bringing about gains for themselves and their fellows.
