6 Habits That Help Successful People Maximize Their Time

Watching lecture videos is now a major part of many students’ uni experience. Some say they prefer them to live lectures, as they can choose when to study. Many students also take advantage of the fact that video playback can be sped up, so cutting the amount of time they spend on lectures. But what impact does sped-up viewing have on learning? The answer, according to Applied Cognitive Psychology, is, within some limits, none. In fact, if used strategically, it can actually improve learning. However, what students think is going to be the best strategy isn’t actually what’s most beneficial.

Background 

First, 231 student participants were assigned to watch two YouTube videos at normal speed, 1.5x speed, 2x speed or 2.5x speed. They were told to watch the videos in full screen and not to pause them or take any notes. After each video, the students took comprehension tests, also repeated a week later. The results were clear: the 1.5x and 2x groups did just as well on the tests as the normal speed group, on both tests. Only at 2.5x was learning impaired.It seems, then, that as long as the material can still be accurately perceived and comprehended, its okay to speed up playback.

An Experiment

So, a student could just watch videos at 2x speed and halve their time spent on lectures….Or, according to the results of other studies reported in the paper, they could watch a video at 2x normal speed twice, and do better on a test than if they’d watched it once at normal speed. The timing mattered, though: only those who’d watched the 2x video for a second time immediately before a test, rather than right after the first viewing, got this advantage.

The Best Way To Watch Lectures At 2x Speed

The team also explored whether watching the videos at different speeds on separate occasions — initially at normal speed but then at double time, or vice versa — might make a difference to test performance immediately afterwards or a week later. Though 76% of the participants in this study said they thought watching first at normal speed then rewatching at double time would be best for learning, the order actually made no difference to test results.

Does The Order Of Speeds Matter?

The researchers do also add a few caveats. While 2x viewing was fine for learning about the material in their studies — real estate appraisals and the Roman Empire — perhaps it might not work for more complex subject matter;only more research will tell.But as so many students do report watching at faster than normal speeds anyway, this work is clearly helpful: it suggests that as long as it’s not more than 2x faster, it’s far from being a bad idea.

Research has definitively shown that overwork isn’t good for employees or their companies. In practice, it can be hard to overcome unhealthy work habits and reach a more sustainable work-life balance.
To achieve lasting change, you must view this process not as a one-time activity, but as a cycle in which you constantly re-evaluate your evolving feelings and priorities, and adjust your work and life choices accordingly.

The Pursuit Of Work-Life Balance

At a high level, research showed that achieving better balance between professional and personal priorities boils down to a combination of <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00187267030568004">reflexivity</a> — or questioning assumptions to increase self-awareness — and intentional role redefinition. 
Importantly, research suggests that this is not a one-time fix, but rather, a cycle that we must engage in continuously as our circumstances and priorities evolve. This cycle is made up of five distinct steps

Striking The Impossible Balance

Take a step back and ask yourself: What is currently causing me stress, unbalance, or dissatisfaction? How are these circumstances affecting how I perform and engage with my job? How are they impacting my personal life? What am I prioritizing? What am I sacrificing? What is getting lost? 
Only after you take a mental pause and acknowledge these factors can you begin to tackle them.

Our priorities often shift faster than our day-to-day time allocation habits. The interviewees that described a more positive work-life balance intentionally reprioritized how they spent their time in a way that lined up with their true priorities. 
One participant described how he still saw himself as a professional, but redefined that professional role to be more inclusive of other valued roles, such as being a parent.

Before jumping into solutions, first, reflect on the aspects of your work and life that could be different in order to better align with your priorities. 
Are there components of your job that you would like to see changed? How much time would you like to spend with your family, or on hobbies?

Consider Your Alternatives

Both public and private changes can be effective strategies, as long as they’re implemented in a sustainable manner. For private changes, that might mean self-imposing boundaries or turning down demands typically associated with your role. 
For public changes, rather than simply telling your supervisor that you want more time off or more flexible hours, securing support from key mentors, partners, and coworkers — or even better, formally applying for a new internal position or a flexible working scheme — is likely to result in more lasting change.
