Back in 2021–2022, in secondary school, I first heard about crypto from my classmates. Funny enough, I thought it was a scam—just another money trap. Who knew I’d end up this deep into Web3?

Cryptocurrency (J23)

Decentralized applications (dApps) are like your regular apps, but on steroids—they run on blockchain or peer-to-peer networks, not centralized servers.So, no one entity controls them. This gives them a bunch of cool advantages and, of course, some challenges.

How dApps Work Smart ContractsdApps use smart contracts to handle transactions and processes automatically without the need for a middleman. DecentralizationNo central authority or company. TransparencyTransactions are recorded on an immutable ledger (read: super secure). AccessibilityAnyone with internet access can use them.

Centralized vs. Decentralized Apps OwnershipCentralized apps (think Facebook or Uber) are owned by a single company. For dApps, ownership is shared by everyone using them. BackendCentralized apps run on private servers; dApps run on the blockchain. PrivacydApp transactions are public but pseudo-anonymous (not fully anonymous but with some privacy). dApp (J22)

Alright, let’s talk about modular blockchains because they’re basically the new wave, replacing the old-school monolithic blockchains. Think of it like this: monolithic blockchains try to do everything themselves—execution, consensus, settlement, data storage—all in one place. But that’s kinda inefficient when you wanna scale. Modular blockchains? Different story. They break things down into specialized layers, kinda like a group project where everyone actually does their part (for once).

One layer handles execution (aka processing transactions), another does settlement (making sure transactions reach their final destination), the consensus layer checks if transactions are legit (so no one spends money they don’t have), and the data availability layer stores all the receipts—timestamps, hashes, nonces, the whole deal. Because these functions are separated, modular blockchains are way more efficient, flexible, and scalable. And this is a big deal because it helps solve the blockchain scalability trilemma (more on that later).

Now, modular blockchains come in different types: 1. Roll-ups – They execute transactions and then post the data to a Layer 1 blockchain (like Ethereum). Basically, they do the heavy lifting and let Layer 1 handle final validation. 2. Validiums – Similar to roll-ups, but instead of posting data to Layer 1, they rely on proof-of-stake validators to process transactions off-chain and then submit the results back to Layer 1. 3. Sovereign Roll-ups – These bad boys don’t even need a Layer 1. They handle execution and settlement on their own, meaning they’re fully independent.

So yeah, modular blockchains are the next step in the evolut﻿ion of crypto. They make blockchains faster, more scalable, and more customizable while still keeping things decentralized and secure. The space is moving fast, and devs are constantly coming up with new ways to push the limits. Buckle up, ‘cause we’re just getting started. The pros and cons of modular blockchains because, like everything in tech, they come with both.

The Good Stuff (Advantages) 1. Scalability – Obviously, modular blockchains are built to scale. They handle way more transactions without slowing down. 2. Flexibility & Interoperability – These blockchains are like social butterflies. They let different chains and virtual machines (Ethereum VM, Solana VM, etc.) work together seamlessly. 3. Application Versatility – Makes decentralized app (dApp) development smoother and more efficient. More use cases, more possibilities.

4. Customizable Tech Stack – Devs love variety. Modular blockchains allow for more customization, so developers can experiment with different stacks and build exactly what they need. The Not-So-Great Stuff (Disadvantages) 1. Complexity – If you think monolithic blockchains are tough, modular blockchains take it up a notch. Steeper learning curve for both devs and users. 2. Limited Testing – These are still pretty new, meaning they haven’t been fully battle-tested like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Long-term stability? Still a question mark.
