Even before the rise of second-brain apps like notion, obsidian or roam; there was this invention called the filling cabinet known as a great gigantic memory tool. The benefit was being able to organize content of any sort of information: documents, bills, tax forms, receipts, and more. But not everyone was happy of how the filling caninets were suppose to externalized personal memory. What would be the consequences of trying to turn every aspect if your life into information? -

The Evolution Of The Filling Cabinet

These platforms have fostered subcultures of devotees users, who built templates of almost anything from Habits Trackers to Life Dashboards. These apps encourage a radical level of self-documentation, especially the most prosaic details of their lives on to them. People have databases of all the books they wanna read or articles to read. Watching notions users describe how they are building their systems and accumulating information of every aspect of their lives. But, do we really need all that information? Why is this need to constantly capture and store information increasing so rapidly?

The Anxiety Become The Reality

Even though, these apps have created subcultures that adore using them to upload and organize information at an excesive level, saying that they are the despicable tools is an exageration. They do serve their purpose of organizing data, its just that we need to get aware of how we are using it, if what we are doing with it is meaningful or just an activity we do to feel "productive and busy".

Basically it is when we take destructive steps that get us further from our own succes.But if we want to achieve our goals, why do we sabotage ourselves?And more importantly, what can we do to stop this harmful behavior that impacts on every aspect of our lives?Well, first we must identify the causes, stop or eliminate the trigger and keep going with treatment.

Self-Sabotage 

People who self-sabotage might be aware of their actions or they might unconsciously act. But there are several causes for these behaviors:<ul><li>Childhood issues: Our earliest engagement with caregivers affects how we connect to others.</li><li>Difficult relationship effects: Reasons included insecure attachment styles, fear of getting hurt, <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/how-fear-of-commitment-can-impact-your-relationship-5199748">fear of commitment</a>, and unhealthy relationship beliefs.</li><li>Low self-esteem: They behave in ways that confirm negative beliefs about themselves.  </li><li>Cognitive dissonance: Holding two conflicting ideas at the same time.</li></ul>

Procrastination: You show others you’re never ready and put off a good outcome. It’s because people fear disappointing others, failing, or succeeding.Perfectionism: Holding oneself to an impossible standard will cause delays and setbacks.They end up feeling ashamed, when something went wrong. Prone to depression, they feel like they are letting everyone down.Self-Medication: To deal with the constant battle between wanting to be successful and the script in their brains saying they can’t be, many soothe themselves through drugs or alcohol.

Common Ways People Self-Sabotage

<ul><li>Stop procrastinating</li></ul>If you keep putting something off what’s important to you, it might be easier emotionally than reaching a goal that you were told you’d never reach. <ul><li>Stop perfectionistic thinking</li></ul>Maybe you overthink every detail. Aim to strive for excellence, not perfection. Make small improvements and note progress on the way toward accomplishing the desired goal.<ul><li>Stop looking solely at the big picture</li></ul>When you shoot for something big, like becoming a top salesperson where you work, a giant goal can feel overwhelming. To prevent acts of self-sabotage, don’t get hung up on minutiae.

How to Stop Self-Sabotaging

If you think you self-sabotage, ask yourself:<ul><li>Is your behavior aligning with your goals?</li><li>If not, what is stopping you from taking action to make your dreams come true?</li><li>Do you feel uneasiness or discomfort when you progress? If yes, dig deeper:</li><li>Is this discomfort based on what others told you that limited your aspirations?</li><li>Is this discomfort based on a fear of failure and worry about looking foolish?</li><li>Are you concerned with achieving more than you thought possible?</li><li>If you do better or achieve more, do you believe success is more than you deserve?</li></ul>

Why We Self-Sabotage and How To Stop the Cycle

Almost every student has done one of these bad habits that decrease our focus, concentration, and energy and makes it harder to study and learn. That's why here is a list of the bad habits we should quit:<ul><li>Cramming all night</li><li>Procrastinate</li><li>Multitask</li><li>Lacking a productivity system</li><li>Get easily distracted</li><li>Not taking breaks or rewarding yourself.</li></ul>

How to study better and lesser while quitting bad habits 

It can be really tempting to do cramming all night but trying to absorb big amounts of information in a short time is not effective. Plus, this practice has disadvantages:<ul><li>Increases your stress levels</li><li>Affects the ability to concreate</li><li>Reduce the amount of sleep  that you get </li></ul>Solution: <ul><li>Make a study plan and a review timeline</li><li>Start to prepare for exams at least 2 weeks before the test</li><li>Go to sleep earlier the day before </li></ul>

Don't study the night before the exam

Doing anything at the last minute is the worst thing we can do. There are several reasons why we may procrastinate such as distractions, fear of failure, and perfectionism. However, if we don't control our time somebody else will (social media I am looking at you!!).So, in order to get things done:<ul><li>Plan your activities ahead</li><li>Estimate how much time you will spend on tasks.</li><li>Time track what you do and you will see where your time is going. </li></ul>

Don't procrastinate!

It's something that may sound productive but it isn't, doing several things at the same time, decrease our concertation from the activities since we are switching from one to another. Solution:<ul><li>Concentration on one activity at a time.</li><li>It increases the level of focus and the quality of our work.</li><li>Time blocking can be helped to take similar tasks one at a time in a single session.  </li></ul>

Say NO to Multitasking!

It doesn't mare what type of system or method you use as long as it helps you stay organized.But, if you want some tips, your system should have these characteristics.<ul><li>A method to prioritize and manage your projects, tasks, and chores.</li><li>Plan events and be able to see them in a day, week, and month view.</li><li>Keep track of every activity that you are doing</li></ul>

Not having a system to stay  organized

When you are in the class, don't use your phone or watch TikTok videos. Can be really hard to not get distracted by the number of objects or the environment of your study space, but this activity has a cost.Solution:<ul><li>Turn off any devices that could distract you from the class.</li><li>Get prepared before the class (clean up your desk, read the slides or the textbook from the lecture)</li><li>Take notes on the most important things you hear during the class.</li></ul>

Don't get distracted during the class

Whenever you accomplish something like finishing the assignment, writing a paper, or reviewing the last lecture presentation; you should reward yourself.You can...<ul><li>Eat snacks</li><li>Watch a video</li><li>Call a friend</li><li>Take a nap</li><li>Drink a coffee</li></ul>Any activity that brings you joy should be enough to remind yourself that the effort you do is worth it.By the way, take breaks after tackling demanding tasks that take longer o finish, remember we need rest and gain energy. Please, do it! Believe you don't want to get burned out.

Without much time, we wouldn't be able to do many of our activities.In these case, time-management techniques such as time blocking or task prioritization can increase the number of hours we have to spend on certain things.

TIME

Multiplying your time: Doing something today that will give you more time tomorrow.The Focus Funnel: A way to know how to approach a task.<ul><li>Whether it can be eliminated, delegated, done today, or leave it for later.</li></ul>Divide your time: Give a clear start and finish time to your projects.<ul><li>It's better to have defined deadlines to avoid procrastination.</li><li>Time blocking can be helpful to work on specific activities during the day.</li></ul>

Multiply and divide your time

We can have all the time in the world, but if we don't have the energy to do the work, we won't get anything done.Activities that can improve our health and increase our energy are exercise, nutrition, and sleep.

ENERGY

TRAIN: <ul><li>Exercise: It increases our cortisol levels and body temperature which means we will be more alert and focused.</li><li>Nutrition: Eat healthily and reduce the consumption of junk food.</li></ul>RECOVER<ul><li>Sleep: Getting enough quality sleep is important to consolidate knowledge and erase the waste of your brain.</li><li>Mindfulness: Directing your attention to the moment can improve your cognition and reduce depression, anxiety, fear  or pain.</li></ul>

We can have all the time and energy to do stuff, but if we don't have a clear goal or objective, all that effort will end up being unproductive work. For this section, the key is to reduce distraction and increase traction to get closer to your goals.

Traction: Getting closer to your goals.Distration: Getting further from them.To maximize your traction and minimize distraction we can use the pomodoro technique, distraction-free workspace, or deep work-mode.

Who hasn't been overwhelmed by the many apps out there that sell themselves as the ultimate all-in-one tool? or Who hasn't been frustrated with the desire of finding a perfect app that will satisfy all the needs.If you are one of those, let me tell you I know how it feels. It is part of the journey, but if you are kinda lost in this messy world, the following apps may help you stay organized.REMINDER:Don't forget that it doesn't matter what app you use, your system needs to have at least these features:<ul><li>Task management and prioritization</li><li>Time Tracking Software</li><li>Schedule events</li></ul>

The best apps to build your productivity and time management sys

A task management app that allows you:<ul><li>To create categories, projects, and subtasks</li><li>To give your tasks a date, hour, and level of priority. So, you know exactly what you need to do each day, and which things can be done later.</li><li>To see statistics about your productivity </li></ul>Plus: It has an integration with Google Calendar so any task you do will appear in your calendar as an event.

Todoist

A time tracking app that will give you some insights into how you are spending your time. Plus: <ul><li>It has an integration with Google Calendar so all the events or activities that are already part of your schedule can sync with Toggl.</li><li>The integration with Todoist allows you to start tracking tasks directly from your to-do list.</li></ul>

Toggl

By far one of the best ways to plan ahead, add events, use time blocking, and see all the things you have been doing.<ul><li>It allows seeing all the activities you have in a day, week, month, and year view.</li><li>Quickly schedule meetings and events</li><li>Get reminders about upcoming activities.</li></ul>

Google Calendar

These are the only apps I am currently using as my productivity system. (Aside from Notion, which I use more as a note-taking app). After been compulsively using app by app trying to find the perfect one, I decide to stay with these 3 apps that for specific functions.
