Consider the many different purposes that conversation can serve. Of course, we speak with others – and to ourselves! – to impart information. But we also exchange words to ask questions, forge connections, vent emotions, change attitudes, gain status, urge action, share stories, pass the time, advise, amuse, comfort, challenge, and much, much more. Examining what makes conversation work, and looking at how philosophers have thought about conversation, opens a window on to how language functions and how we function with language.

Why Do We Exchange Words?

British philosophers from the 18th century, who were fixated on impressions and ideas, would have taken successful conversations to be those that moved the relevant cluster of ideas from one conversant’s head to another’s. This idea, though tempting, turns out to be inadequate. The problem of other minds suggests we can never entirely confirm uptake: what could show that another had fully grasped our meaning?

Is Successful Conversation The Mere Moving Of Ideas?

Notions of conversation as a moving of ideas generally take words to be straightforwardly labels for things in the world and to parse sentences using a correspondence theory of truth that takes true sentences to match or refer to states of affairs that they describe. These expectations are quickly defeated as we can easily assemble a list of meaningful words that do not label individual things in the world in a straightforward manner. Consider: dog, politics, jumping, electron, gravity, centaur, square circle… So our understanding of words and what we do with them must be more complex.

Words Always Have A Meaning. Or Many. 

The context in which utterances are delivered has a crucial bearing on their significance. To borrow a vivid example from Robert Stecker, the exhortation “The bus is coming” can signify radically different things depending on the context. If we are late and the bus is arriving, I am urging you to sprint towards the bus stop. If we are at the bus stop already and you are standing in the street as the bus approaches, I am warning you to leap away before you are flattened. A variety of other factors – such as irony, satire and common idioms – can also displace words from their traditional meaning

Words Always Have A Context. Or Many. 

Accounting for such complexities, Anglophone philosophers in the mid-20th century attempted to analyse verbal communication in greater detail. J L Austin’s book How to Do Things with Words (1962) distinguished three different sorts of speech acts, that is, three different ways we can put language to use. He labelled them locutionary (saying something meaningful), illocutionary (what you intend by saying something; its “force” in Austin’s jargon), and perlocutionary acts.

This latter class is the most radical. It involves using words to accomplish something specific in the world. Examples include binding yourself to another by uttering “I promise” or becoming married by uttering “I do.”The expected consequences can unfurl only when certain conditions are met: think of the many surprises that can invalidate a marriage ceremony.Austin’s taxonomy of our speech acts goes some way towards illuminating what is happening in conversation, but it doesn’t answer the question of what makes for a successful conversation.

Perlocutionary Acts Of Speech 

Another British philosopher, H P Grice, noted in 1975 that successful conversation is a cooperative enterprise rather than a series of disconnected remarks. Certain shared expectations are in place greasing the skids of our conversational give and take. In particular, he announced a “cooperative principle”: “make your conversational contribution such as is required at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged.”

The cooperative principle is observed by following four maxims: of quantity (be informative), quality (be truthful), relation (be relevant) and manner (be clear). For Grice, we communicate by intending that others recognize our intentions to do so. Communication can be undermined if we violate any or all of the maxims – if we offer less information than is required or too much information that distracts; if we make false claims or claims for which we lack evidential support; if we embark on tangents; if we formulate obscure or ambiguous remarks; if we are prolix or disorganized.

The 4 Maxims Of The Cooperative Principle

Following Grice’s maxims helps ensure that our utterances convey the meaning we intended. But this is far from guaranteeing conversational success. Not only must the speaker choose her words properly, but her conversant must be open to receiving them. So what makes for a receptive interlocutor? It helps to be willing, deferential, interested, intrigued. We valorise conversations when we speak of them as flowing.

We Are Transmitters, We Are Receivers And We Are Transceivers

Grice’s emphasis on cooperation is crucial. Both parties to a conversation must want it to succeed. He posits a structure of mirrored and iterated intentions that facilitate conversational exchange. Working together, conversants can explore a subject matter or perform a task. Of course the division of labour will never be exactly equal. But successful and satisfying conversation results when participants share a communicative goal, enjoy a minimal match of manner and style, and accommodate one another’s interests, moods and needs.

For A Conversation To Work, We Must Really Want It To Work

The conditions of “share-enjoy-accomodate” do sometimes obtain. Granted, people differ in their levels of conversational engagement. Some are taciturn and need to be drawn out, others are prone to logorrhea and hog verbal space. Interest, admiration, and attraction can all facilitate conversational give and take. There were certain European institutions – the salons and coffeehouses of 17th- and 18th-century Paris and London – where bravura conversation was foregrounded. Even today, it can be fun to engage in a conversation where participants riff on a theme like jazz players performing solos.

While some successful speakers seek to build up their conversational partners, others aim to belittle. Different attitudes towards a subject matter, different levels of knowledge, differences in how one’s day is going can all affect conversational flow. Someone who is especially knowledgeable or especially entertaining merits attentive listening, but not someone out to assuage her ego or score points. Certain purposes and certain conversational styles are inimical to satisfactory conversation. And there are some chasms that simply can’t be bridged.

Why Do Some Conversations Seem Pleasant, And Others Off-putting?

Imbalances of power are especially likely to taint these efforts. Power differentials between conversants play a key role in who speaks, who listens. Gender is clearly relevant since power is not equally distributed across this dimension. Deborah Tannen, the linguist and author of multiple books on conversation, frames her bestseller You Just Don’t Understand (1990) by claiming that conversations between men and women closely resemble anthropologists’ accounts of cross-cultural exchanges. That is, men and women inhabit different worlds with starkly different values and expectations.

Obstacles To Conversation: Power

Tannen proposes that women view conversation as an opportunity to network and connect, while men instead talk in order to gain status and put others down. Of course, there are exceptions to this brusque generalisation, but Tannen offers evidence, both real-life examples and cases from fiction, to show that her framework often holds true. Exploring the phenomenon she calls “troubles talk”, she says that men generally try to offer a quick fix for whatever problem is being broached, while women tend to respond in the first person, telling of their own experiences that resemble the problem.

The “Troubles Talk”

One habit threatens to sink cooperation perhaps more than any other: the phenomenon of being talked at. We often defer to experts, acknowledging their greater or special life experience. But being talked at is different: it’s belittling. It treats the listener as an acolyte instead of a conversant. Rebecca Solnit’s boom Men Explain Things to Me (2008) presents an extreme version of this phenomenon. At a dinner party, a man held forth at great and unwelcome length about a book he thought she could profit from reading. It turned out that she was in fact its author!

Being “Talked At”

Obstacles to conversation are not all immediately apparent, as is the case with micro-aggressions. The conflict management specialist Mary Rowe in 2008 introduced a useful companion category, called “micro-affirmations”, those “apparently small acts, which are often ephemeral and hard to see … which occur wherever people wish to help others to succeed. [They] are tiny acts of opening doors to opportunity, gestures of inclusion and caring, and graceful acts of listening.”

But not all have seen micro-affirmations as welcome. The philosopher Jill Delston, for instance, argues that they can harm when doled out inequitably and can accord undue influence to those who habitually dispense them. The idea of what makes for a successful conversation is always tricky, and always contested.

Whatever makes for good conversation, we can agree that it should be valued. As such, we should all find ways to enhance our conversational skills. Many of the titans of literature have left, alongside a body of work that models powerful writing, aboding evidence on the craft that examines the source of that power. Unrivaled among them in the combination of cultural impact and sheer splendor of prose is Rachel Carson — the Promethean writer and marine biologist whose 1962 masterwork of moral courage, Silent Spring ignited the modern environmental movement.

The Source Of Powerful Writing

Carson, who made an art of illuminating nature beyond scientific fact, resented the notion that science is somehow separate from life. Our only means of upending the conventions and belief systems we resent is by modeling superior alternatives, and that is precisely what Carson did with her 1937 masterpiece Undersea, which pioneered a new way of writing about science with a strong lyrical sensibility, revealing the native poetry of nature. The piece became the seed for Carson’s 1951 bestseller The Sea Around Us, which won her the National Book Award.

The materials of science are the materials of life itself. Science is part of the reality of living; it is the what, the how, and the why of everything in our experience. It is impossible to understand man without understanding his environment and the forces that have molded him physically and mentally.

The aim of science is to discover and illuminate truth. And that, I take it, is the aim of literature, whether biography or history or fiction; it seems to me, then, that there can be no separate literature of science.

My own guiding purpose was to portray the subject of my sea profile with fidelity and understanding. All else was secondary. I did not stop to consider whether I was doing it scientifically or poetically; I was writing as the subject demanded.

The winds, the sea, and the moving tides are what they are. If there is wonder and beauty and majesty in them, science will discover these qualities. If they are not there, science cannot create them. If there is poetry in my book about the sea, it is not because I deliberately put it there, but because no one could write truthfully about the sea and leave out the poetry.

The writer must never attempt to impose himself upon his subject. He must not try to mold it according to what he believes his readers or editors want to read. His initial task is to come to know his subject intimately, to understand its every aspect, to let it fill his mind. Then at some turning point the subject takes command and the true act of creation begins… The discipline of the writer is to learn to be still and listen to what his subject has to tell him.

If you write what you yourself sincerely think and feel and are interested in, the chances are very high that you will interest other people as well.

Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature - the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.

One way to open your eyes is to ask yourself, “What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?”

The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us the less taste we shall have for the destruction of our race. Wonder and humility are wholesome emotions, and they do not exist side by side with a lust for destruction.

The question is whether any civilization can wage relentless war on life without destroying itself, and without losing the right to be called civilized.

The human race is challenged more than ever before to demonstrate our mastery, not over nature but of ourselves.

If you’re an introvert, striking up a conversation with a stranger at a crowded event might sound like a nightmare. But that’s what networking is all about — and a networking coach says you’re fully capable of mastering the skill. While networking might not be your strong suit, Allen says it’s a skill you can pick up in a few small steps. Here are her seven top tips:

We Need Networking

Small statements that reinforce positive thoughts about yourself can help you get rid of your negative thoughts over time, Allen says — whether you’re fighting harmful misconceptions about introverts or other personal insecurities. Allen recommends writing down your affirmations in a journal, an index card or even somewhere on your phone. Read them as often as possible, especially when you’re having negative thoughts. The result, she says: You’ll start to carry yourself with more confidence, and that will only draw more people to you.

1. Create a few affirmations for yourself

As much as you might want to avoid attending networking events with large groups of people, they’re still a great way to make business connections, Allen says. To ease your stress, ask a close work friend to come along so you can help each other navigate the event — or even approach strangers together if that’s more comfortable, Allen suggests. Try to schedule networking events when you’ll have enough energy to do something that doesn’t come naturally to you. Consider avoiding events right after work, when you might be too tired to put forth your best effort. Allen also recommends creating specific goals to help you make the most of attending. That might mean staying at the venue for at least one hour or getting contact information from at least two people before the event ends.

2. Have a strategy for networking events

After you make those new business connections, the next step is to schedule one-on-one meetings with them. Allen recommends meeting at least one networking connection weekly, for roughly 30 minutes each. Getting to know your new connections better will help you build a network that can help advance your career or business, she says. Try preparing some questions in advance to make the conversation easier, Allen suggests. Focus on learning more about them, their line of work and what advice they may have for you. Be prepared to share information about yourself and your career goals. You’ll come away knowing whether you could work together or assist each other in some way, Allen says.

3. Schedule one-on-ones

Always following up after connecting with someone at an event or one-on-one meeting can make you stand out, Allen says. It’s a simple step that can make others remember you in a positive light.  Send an email, a text message or a handwritten note that thanks them for connecting with you, and either initiates another meetup or lets them know you’ll reach out again in the future. Make it a habit to send those follow-up messages within 24 to 48 hours of connecting, Allen says.

4. Make following up a habit

Social media can’t fully replace networking in person, but it’s a free and “low-energy” alternative that still allows you to make connections and promote your career and business.Some platforms might be more useful than others: People in your industry may be most active on Twitter, while people from another industry might frequently post on LinkedIn.After you’ve connected with someone, send them a direct message thanking them for connecting with you and explaining why you wanted to connect. Then, stay engaged: Regularly post about your ongoing projects or comment on other people’s posts.

5. Take advantage of social media

Remembering people’s names and pronouncing them correctly is a simple way to make a great lasting impression on someone, Allen says. She acknowledges that it can be difficult, so she has a few strategies for what to do after someone introduces themselves to you. Ask them how to correctly pronounce their name, and repeat it back to them to make it easier for your mind to remember. Find a few opportunities to use their name in your conversation with them, she adds: It can make you more personable while increasing your chances of remembering it.

6. Pay attention to names

Smiling may not be appropriate in all situations, but Allen suggests making it a goal to smile more often during conversations with new connections. It’ll make you appear more confident, she says. A <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02699931.2013.817383">2013 study </a>by researchers in Switzerland presented different faces with varying happiness to a group of participants. They found that participants preferred faces with a stronger smile.  “Everybody appreciates the smile,” Allen says. “I would love more introverts to get out there and show your smile because it will only help you make those connections you want.”

Most people tend to overplay the risks involved in speaking up. “Our natural bias is to start by imagining all the things that will go wrong.” Your counterpart might be surprised and a little upset at first. But chances are you’re not going to get fired or make a lifelong enemy. First, consider “the risks of not speaking up” — perhaps the project will be derailed or you’ll lose the team’s trust — then realistically weigh those against the potential consequences of taking action.

1. Be realistic about the risks

After this risk assessment, you may decide it’s best to hold off on voicing your opinion. Maybe you haven’t finished thinking the problem through, the whole discussion was a surprise to you, or you want to get a clearer sense of what the group thinks. If you think other people are going to disagree too, you might want to gather your army first.People can contribute experience or information to your thinking — all the things that would make the disagreement stronger or more valid.

2. Decide whether to wait

Before you share your thoughts, think about what the powerful person cares about — it may be “the credibility of their team or getting a project done on time.” You’re more likely to be heard if you can connect your disagreement to a “higher purpose.” When you do speak up, don’t assume the link will be clear. The discussion will then become “more like a chess game than a boxing match.”

3. Identify a shared goal

This step may sound overly deferential, but it’s a smart way to give the powerful person “psychological safety” and control. <ul><li>You can say something like, “I know we seem to be moving toward a first-quarter commitment here. </li></ul>I have reasons to think that won’t work. I’d like to lay out my reasoning. Would that be OK?” This gives the person a choice, allowing them to verbally opt-in. <ul><li>And, assuming they say yes, it will make you feel more confident about voicing your disagreement.</li></ul>

4. Ask permission to disagree

You might feel your heart racing or your face turning red, but do whatever you can to remain neutral in both your words and actions. When your body language communicates reluctance or anxiety, it undercuts the message.Deep breaths can help, as can speaking more slowly and deliberately.“When we feel panicky we tend to talk louder and faster. Talking in an even tone helps calm the other person down and does the same for you.”

5. Stay calm

After you’ve gotten permission, articulate the other person’s point of view. What is the idea, opinion, or proposal that you’re disagreeing with? Stating that clearly, possibly even better than your counterpart did, lays a strong foundation for the discussion.“You want your counterpart to say, ‘She understands.’ You don’t want to get in a fight about whether you get her point.”

6. Validate the original point

When you move on to expressing your concerns, watch your language carefully to avoid any “judgment words” such as “short-sighted,” “foolish,” or “hasty” that might set off your counterpart; one of his tips is to cut out all adjectives, since “they have the potential to be misinterpreted or taken personally.” Share only facts.For example, you can say, “We’ve tried four projects like this in the past, and we were able to do two in a similar time, but those were special circumstances.”

7. Don’t make judgments

Emphasize that you’re offering your opinion, not gospel truth. “It may be a well-informed, well-researched opinion, but it’s still an opinion, [so] talk tentatively and slightly understate your confidence.” Say, “This is just my opinion, but I don’t see how we will make that deadline.”Remind the person that this is your point of view, and then invite criticism. Experts suggest trying something like, “Tell me where I’m wrong with this.” Be genuinely open to hearing other opinions.

8. Stay humble

Ultimately, the person in power is probably going to make the final decision, so acknowledge that. You might say, “I know you’ll make the call here. This is up to you.” That will not only show that you know your place but also remind them that they have choices. Don’t backtrack on your opinion or give false praise, though. “You want to show respect to the person while maintaining your self-respect.”

9. Acknowledge their authority
