The triple filter test refers to an anecdote of the great Greek philosopher, Socrates. The story tells that, one day, one of Socrates’ disciples was quite agitated. He told Socrates that he had just met one of Socrates’ friends and that he had spoken badly of him.Socrates asked the man to calm down. After thinking for a moment, he asked him to wait a minute. Before listening to what he had to say, he told him, the message had to go through a triple filter test. If the message didn’t pass the test, it wasn’t worthy of being heard.

The “Worthy Of Being Said/Heard” Test

As he always did, the Greek philosopher asked his anxious disciple a question: “Are you absolutely sure that what you’re going to tell me is true?” The disciple thought for a moment. In fact, he couldn’t be sure if what his friend had told him was actually malicious. It was a matter of perspective. “So you do not know if everything he said about me is true or not,” said the philosopher. The disciple had to admit that he didn’t.

Filter #1: Is It True?

Then, Socrates asked him a second question:“Is what you’re going to tell me good or not?” The disciple replied that, evidently, it wasn’t good at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He believed that what he was going to share with the philosopher would cause him discomfort and distress. Thus, Socrates said to him: “You’re going to tell me something bad, but you’re not completely sure it’s true”. The disciple admitted that this was the case.

Filter #2: Is It Good?

Then, Socrates asked the third and final question: “Is what you have to say about my friend going to help me in any way?” The disciple hesitated. He really didn’t know if that information was useful or not. Maybe it would distance him from his friend, but considering that he wasn’t sure whether it was true or not, maybe it wasn’t useful at all.

Filter #3: Is It Useful?

In the end, the philosopher refused to listen to what his disciple wanted to tell him. “If what you want to tell me isn’t true, isn’t good, and isn’t even useful, why would I want to hear it?” he finally told his disciple.Truth, goodness, and usefulness are the foundation of Socrates’ triple filter test. Socrates thought that a person must ask themselves the following questions before they say anything: “Am I sure that what I am going to say is true?”, “Is what I’m going to say a good thing?”, and “Do I really need to say it and is it useful?”

In everyday life, it’s not easy to define the true, the good, and the necessary. These are abstract concepts that are sometimes difficult to apply. That’s why there are also some additional questions that can help us when it comes to applying the triple filter test.

How to apply the triple filter test

<ul><li>Do I know for a fact that this information is true? </li><li>Can I bet on it? </li><li>Will I be able to prove it to anyone? </li><li>Am I willing to compromise my reputation over this?</li></ul>

Truth-Filtering Questions To Ask

<ul><li>Does this information benefit me or the other person? </li><li>Will it make them or me a better person and evoke positive emotions? </li><li>Will the situation of those involved improve?</li></ul>

Goodness-Filtering Questions To Ask

<ul><li>By knowing this information, will that person’s life or my life improve?</li><li>Can that person take any practical action regarding this information or message?</li><li>In what way does not knowing this information hurt or affect the other person?</li></ul>

Usefulness-Filtering Questions To Ask

The triple filter test is particularly oriented at rumors or gossip. Applying it allows us to put a stop to annoying gossip and rumors that sometimes haunt us, such as those we see in social networks. But, more importantly, the test is a great life lesson and an excellent guide, for anything and everything that we’re going to say and for anything and everything that we’re going to listen to.

Humans need an accurate view of the world to survive. If your model of reality is different from the actual world, then you struggle to take effective actions each day.However, truth is not the only thing that matters to the human mind. Humans also seem to have a deep desire to belong.Humans are herd animals. We want to fit in, bond with others, and earn the respect and approval of our peers. Such inclinations are essential to our survival. For most of our evolutionary history, our ancestors lived in tribes. Becoming separated from the tribe—or worse, being cast out—was a death sentence.

The Logic of False Beliefs

Convincing someone to change their mind is the process of convincing them to change their tribe. If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too. You have to give them somewhere to go. Nobody wants their worldview torn apart if loneliness is the outcome. The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, integrate them into your tribe, and bring them into your circle. Now, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.

Facts Don't Change Our Minds. Friendship Does.

Years ago, Ben Casnocha mentioned an idea to me that I haven't been able to shake: The people who are most likely to change our minds are the ones we agree with on 98 percent of topics.If someone you know, like, and trust believes a radical idea, you are more likely to give it merit, weight, or consideration. You already agree with them in most areas of life. Maybe you should change your mind on this one too. But if someone wildly different than you proposes the same radical idea, well, it's easy to dismiss them as a crackpot.

The Spectrum of Beliefs

There is another reason bad ideas continue to live on, which is that people continue to talk about them.Silence is death for any idea. An idea that is never spoken or written down dies with the person who conceived it. Ideas can only be remembered when they are repeated. They can only be believed when they are repeated.I have already pointed out that people repeat ideas to signal they are part of the same social group. But here's a crucial point most people miss: People also repeat bad ideas when they complain about them. Before you can criticize an idea, you have to reference that idea.

Why False Ideas Persist

Why do you want to criticize bad ideas in the first place? Presumably, you want to criticize bad ideas because you think the world would be better off if fewer people believed them. In other words, you think the world would improve if people changed their minds on a few important topics.If the goal is to change minds, then I don't believe criticizing the other side is the best approach. Most people argue to win, not to learn.

He quickly learned that the hardest part of crossing language lines was adjusting to real-life conversation, and the hardest conversations to adjust to were disagreements. That was where passions ran high, ordinary rhythms of speech broke down, and people started to interrupt.

Arguing For And Arguing About: To Argue Is Not To Fight

Bo Seo sensed that his differences from his peers, if exposed, could mark him as an outsider and let slip whatever foothold of belonging he had achieved in this new place. That made him resolve to be very agreeable, to smile, to nod, and to keep most of his thoughts to himself. What broke him out of that posture of conflict aversion was a promise from his fifth-grade teacher that in debate, when one person speaks, no one else does. To someone used to being spoken over and spun out of conversation, that sounded like a kind of salvation.

Debate Can Unleash Our Voice

An argument is not a random grab bag of thoughts or exclamations. It’s not a repetition of all the things you think about a particular subject. An argument is a tool for changing minds, and it has two basic burdens of proof. First, showing that its main claim is true, and second, that this claim is important.

An Argument’s Burdens Of Proof: Truth And Importance

Imagine arguing that we should stop eating meat because vegetarianism benefits the environment. For that argument to succeed, first you have to show that being vegetarian is, in fact, good for the environment. Otherwise you have no legs to stand on for the claim that healing the environment means no longer eating meat.

Proving Truth

Second, the true question at the core of this argument asks, why should we privilege the health of the environment over personal enjoyment? It’s often that second part that people neglect. It’s not enough to show that you have a point—you have to make it count for the other side. That involves asking why the truth of this argument should change your mind and behavior.

Proving Importance

When you start picking up the strategies and secrets of good debate, every objectionable thing people say seems like an opportunity to quarrel and make a point. To the one holding the hammer, everything seems like a nail. But we know that good conversations and relationships have agreement alongside disagreement. If one measure of cleverness is the ability to argue well and make a point, then wisdom rests in knowing when to argue and when to stop. Bo Seo got around this problem by developing the RISA Checklist.

Choose Your Battles

So, you face a disagreement. Is it:<ul><li>Real?</li><li>Important?</li><li>Specific? and</li><li>Aligned?</li></ul>Before entering into a disagreement, for example, ask yourself if this is a real disagreement as opposed to an imagined slight, or something like that. Second, is the disagreement important enough to justify arguing? Third, is the disagreement specific enough that you can make progress within the allotted time? And fourth, are the two sides aligned in their objectives for the dispute? For instance, is the other side just looking to hurt your feelings?

The RISA Disagreement Checlist

Meeting the RISA Checklist doesn’t guarantee that an argument will go well, but it suggests that there are conditions such that the argument could go well. By being deliberate and not jumping into disagreements out of pride or defensiveness, we can focus on disagreements that are most likely to be productive.

Argue Deliberately 

As a kid, Bo Seo used to hate being told to empathize with my classmates because He didn’t know what “empathy” meant. Some described it as a magical, mental connection that spontaneously arises when you look into the eyes of another person. Others described it as a virtue that the best of us possess and the rest of us can hope to find. In debate, he learned a different way of understanding empathy: empathy as a series of actions.

Debate, Magical Empathy And Practical Empathy

Much of debating is an exercise in certainty. You fully inhabit your perspective and come up with the best possible arguments for your side, recruiting the most persuasive evidence for your case. But in the last five minutes before the start of a round, the best debaters do something extraordinary. They turn to a new sheet of paper and come up with the four best arguments for the other side, or they look over their speech through the eyes of an opponent and try to find as many problems as they can. Those are known as “side-switch exercises.”

The “Side-Switch Exercises”

“Side-switch exercises” don’t help you achieve empathy, exactly, because there is no substitute for really hearing where the other side is coming from. But it does create wriggle room. It gives you the sense that there may be another way of viewing this issue. At a time when many of our disagreements feel like trench warfare, with each side frozen in their position, unable to fathom where the other side is coming from, Bo Seo thinks that wriggle room can help. It creates a space through which empathy might be able to arise.

The “Wriggle Room”

The opposite of bad disagreement is good disagreement. For most of history, entire groups of people were barred from speaking by virtue of their station in life. Multitudes lacked any platform or capacity to be heard. What we’re doing today—embracing diversity in our communities, giving people platforms to raise their voices in the public square, and trying to manage our arguments—all feels unprecedented.
